American Indian Herritage/Roll Number question?

My great great grandfather unforunitly was ashamed f being an Indian so pretty much the history and roll number was lost with his passing. I'm trying to research to see if I can find it again and after calling the affairs office they said to ask relatives. Since he died no one really knows for sure. Is there anyway to get that number or what?
