American Jennie Lee performs well at Ohio
American Jennie Lee was not regarded as the favourite contender for the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic 2012, but she did well at the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) tournament, finishing tied for the
fifth position on the leaderboard.
American contenders, who were expected to keep the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic title within the United States this year, could not display a better performance as most of them finished outside the top 20.
However, lesser-known players like Lee proved their mettle and capitalised on the support given by the spectators at Highland Meadows Golf Club, Ohio.
Lee shot an overall 273 — a score well enough to help her remain in contention throughout the four days. Although the American star faced trouble playing in rough weather conditions as the strong wind bothered
most of the contenders in the roster, her solid putting and swing helped her perform better than her fans had anticipated.
She kicked off the prestigious tournament in impressive style as she posted a 69 in the opening round ramping up pressure on rivals right from the start.
Analysts said that making a solid start in a field loaded with most of the top-ranked contenders did boost her confidence, but her game was not without flaws. She made mistakes on some holes in the second round,
which hampered her from piling up a big score.
Despite finishing tied for the fifth and not winning the tournament on American soil, Lee received plenty of appreciation for her performance.
Commentators said that American fans pinned high hopes on the national players because the tournament was staged in the United States. Moreover, the last edition was won by an Asian contender, which also boosted
the interest of local spectators.
On the other hand, Angela Stanford was the only American contender who came close to winning. Stanford posted an overall 271 to grab the second position.
“I just stayed really patient and really out of character for me today. But I've been rolling the ball really well on the greens this week, so I just kept telling myself if I can just get as many opportunities
as I can, I might have a shot,” Stanford said.
“When I looked at the leaderboard on 14 I think she was at ‑16 at that point. I thought, she's obviously having a great day”.
