American LPGA stars finally toughen up as they outrival Asians at Alabama
American Ladies professional Golf Association (LPGA) stars performed well at the Navistar LPGA Classic 2012 as they grabbed the top two positions on the leaderboard.
Stacy Lewis and the defending champion Lexi Thompson stole the show at the four-day tournament, played at Prattville, Alabama. Lewis shot an overall 270 to clinch the title, while Thompson took the second position
as she posted a 272.
The Navistar LPGA Classic 2012 roster was packed with plenty of top-ranked stars, but Americans were determined not to surrender to nerves this time, and they finally managed to subdue their Asian rivals, especially
South Koreans.
South Korean LPGA stars might have been heavily favoured due to their performance in the current season, but stars like the defending champion Lexi Thompson and Stacy Lewis gave all of them a run for their
money.
American line-up set foot on the course at Prattville, Alabama, with a slew of battle-hardened contenders who were fully prepared to do their best this time. However, there were only a few who can be singled
out as the star performers.
Although the Navistar Classic title remains in the United States, some of the Asian contenders came close to a win. For instance, South Korean M.J. Hur proved to be a tough player from the outset as she posted
an overall 273 to tie for the third position on the leader board.
American Angela Stanford, who was not among the hot favourite contenders for the coveted title, surprised her fans and rivals after she registered an overall 273 to finish tied for the third position along
with South Koreans M.J. Hur and Haeji Kang.
Sharing her thoughts at the end of the third round, Stanford said that she is happy with what she did at the tournament, and she hopes to carry on in the same pace in future competitions.
The American star heaped praise on the winner — Stacy Lewis — saying she is pretty impressed by her game.
“I think the world of Stacy.  I think she's just ‑‑ everything that she's overcome.  I didn't know her when she played college golf, but I think she's a great competitor, I think she's great for the Tour.
So I know she's a winner,” Stanford said.
“I know she (Stacy) is going to try real hard to do it again tomorrow, so I think it will be a great day.  Either way, it's nice to be in the position that you have a chance to win, but at the same time one
of your friends has a chance”.
