American League Gold Glovers announced

Major League Baseball announced their annual winners of the American League Gold Glove awards.

Gold Glove winners of 2010 include the following:

Catcher Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins won his third Gold Glove award since entering the league in 2004.  Last season, he played in 137 games and made only three errors while throwing out 19 base runners.

First basemen Mark Teixeira of the New York Yankees won his fourth Gold Glove since his debut in 2003 with the Texas Rangers.  He currently is the leader among active first basemen with a career fielding percentage of .996.  He only made three errors last year,
and was involved in 137 double plays.

Second baseman Robinson Cano, also of the New York Yankees, won his first gold glove of his career after he had an excellent year out in the field.  His fielding percentage for 2010 was .996 as he made only three errors which were leaps and bounds ahead of
what he did in 2009, a season where he made 12 errors in 744 chances.

Third basemen Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays achieved Gold Glove status for only the second time in his career since 2008.  Despite making 14 errors this season, it would be tough to find a third basemen who is as consistent as Longoria.  This award garnered
lots of arguments as Yankee fans thought it should have been their third baseman, Alex Rodriguez.

Shortstop has belonged to one man since the 2004 season and that would be Derek Jeter of the Yankees.  He has won the award five times over the past seven years.  His six errors made last year were the lowest of his career when he played in over 140 games.

Outfield winners were Tampa Bay’s Carl Crawford, who accomplished the feat for the first time in his career and Franklin Gutierrez of the Seattle Mariners, who also won the honour for the first time of his career.

Then we come to Ichiro Suzuki, the picture of consistency.  Ever since his debut in Major League Baseball in 2001, he has won a Gold Glove for his outstanding work in right field with the Mariners for the past 10 years.  His fielding percentage last season
was a little low at .989 but he only made 4 errors in 365 chances.  It would be naive of anyone to think that this Japanese legend will slow down anytime soon.
The awards for National League fielders will be announced on Wednesday 10 November.
