Since all the bases and the hospital in Augsburg are closed, how hard (or easy?) is it to get medical care from civilian doctors ? Also, how do you get your meds since Express Scripts only ships to APO or FPO adressess ? I know we'll get Tricare Standard over there....does that actually work ??? We are still living in the US, but are thinking about moving back to Augsburg (I'm from there). I have pretty much hit a roadblock over here as far as getting answers from Tricare. I can't find a provider list or participating hospitals in Augsburg either.

If you live there....or used to recently......I would really like to hear what you have to say !!!!!!!! Thanks a lot !

  1. Is there anything near Augsburg military base? I know the places Grafenwoehr, Vilseck, Hohenfels. They are in Bavaria. So what I understand you are talking about Tricare and visiting German doctors at the economy. You need to contact your insurance and ask them. They don't have any doctors under contract in Augsburg, because there is no military. I believe you can visit any doctor and fill claim forms out and send it to Tricare. The claim forms is also online and website www.tricare.com. You don't need any APO address you can do all online. Good Luck.... US Army fam. member...

  2. check out www.tricare.com

  3. All the previous answers are right.  Tricare covers about 75 to 90% of hospital bills and has some deductibles, but it is manageable. As a retiree you can get up to 16oz of mail in any one package, but since everything in Augsburg is closed, the closest installations are in Stuttgart, about an hour's drive, and that is where you'd have to request the retired mail box.  You can also get deliveries from some companies to German mail, but you will probably face some type of fee, though it isn't the standard import tax.  As for listings, these are not required, as the other answers indicate.  You select the doctor and submit the forms.  Mind you, most doctors prefer payment up front since Tricare is not known for speed.  I live and work in Stuttgart now, am an Army civilian, but retired Air Force, and spent two wonderful weeks in the Hospital at Sindelfingen for an appendix operation fortunately mostly covered by my civilian insurance rather than Tricare.
