American Taylor Townsend all set to become pro in 2013 – Tennis News
Taylor Townsend, the 16-year-old American is playing her last junior tournament of 2012 at the Orange Bowl International Championship.
She is the junior number one and the obvious top seed contestant in the tournament. The American superstar ousted the Dutch contestant, Indy de Vroome, in the second round after an intense battle; won the match 7-6(6), 6-4. She used a mix of lobs, drop shots,
slices and fierce winners down the lines to overpower her rival.
The 16-year-old kid has signed a deal with the Lagardere Unlimited agency. She will commence her pro career from the next season. However, the age stipulation of the Women Tennis Association will only allow her to play a maximum of 12 tours in a year.
Townsend commented, “I understand the reasoning of what they’re doing, trying to control the schedule so players don’t get burned out. Unfortunately, you can’t play as many tournaments as you’d like. They have good intentions, though, so I can’t be mad at
that. They’re just trying to protect the players. I felt like it was good timing, I was ready, so I seized the moment.”
She further added, “I’m honestly not expecting anything. Go out and just play. No expectations and no pressure. I’ve proven to myself I can hang with people playing in those events, people older than me. I’ll go one match at a time and see where it takes
me.”
Townsend is ranked 497 in the world with just 61 points under her belt. However, the attitude of the American is right for her age. She says she is not going to carry any expectations in the pro-tours and just enjoy her time out; learn new traits and experience
different top-ranked players who will help her improve at an immense scale.
She has not been called upon by any of the season-opening tournament officials as yet but hopes that someone will give her the wildcard entry into the warm-up event for the new season. It will be a good learning curve for the youngster to play amongst the
big names of the Women Tennis Association.
