Question:

American Tennis----On Steady Decline?

I have said this for much too long but American tennis is steadily declining, and no near rescue in sight.

On the womens side, if not for The Williams Sisters, despite their recent injuries and struggles, and new Mom and often injured, and nearly retired Davenport, who do we have? 33 year old Craybas? Lowly ranked and going no where Ditty, King?? ON mens side, we have the over rated, sadly limited Blake and stubborn tempermental, Roddick. Then the "tier 2" players, Fish, Ginepri, and these guys "getting on with age", then inconsistent Queery, and trying to get there, Young and Isner. There are no up and comers in sight, and while I suppose its respectful in a sense that all the foreign players come here to train, we dont seem to reach out and train our very own. Soon enough we wont have an American to cheer for in both men and womens games. Could this be? Did we ever think this possible? Your thoughts?

  1. i think donald young will be our savior. he almost beat davydenko in the pilot pen 2007. I watched the match in the box seats and cheered for donald. I got his autograph even though he lost. I think he and isner have great potential if they get themselves together.

As for women- King can be a great player if she puts her mind to it. I also think there are some great girls training at the bolleteri academy in florida right now. We will see in the future.

  2. If you love tennis you won't care too much where the people who do are from.  There are quite a few very young Americans coming up but it will take some time for them to get to the level of the Williams sisters etc.  also, tennis can become a very boring game.  See Justine, she just burnt out and quit.  After a while it become monotonous.  It's not like the days with Graf and Evert when these women had nothing else to do.  Todays women and men are doing other things they love and most times tennis becomes secondary.

  3. Well I'm an American and I really don't care about the American players or care less where a player is from. I just like a player for who they are and how they play. There probably wont be any good American players in a long time, but I really don't care. Go Roger, Venus and the  Serbs!

  4. i know davis cup team captain won't agree with me, but there is no "decline" issue.

few years ago, would anybody even put swiss on the tennis map? now thanks to federer, they have a few good tennis players. let's say after federer retire, suddenly there's no swiss winning any more tournament, is that a decline for swiss?

talents show up all the time, it is the matter if our talent is better than other countries talents. we may have going through a period of dry spell, until those better talents show up in the US, it is what it is. i don't think our players work less hard than other countries players, maybe they just not talented enough or simply not breakthrough yet, that's all.
