American Tom Lehman wins the Regions Tradition of Champions Tour – Golf news
Tom Lehman claimed his third victory of 2011 by winning the Regions Tradition on the Champions Tour.
On a role, Lehman has won three out of the seven tournaments he played this year. The winner defeated Peter Senior with a par on the second hole of a playoff in the final round.
“I didn't putt well all week,” Lehman said. “I made a few good putts when I had to. I wasn't sure I was ever going to make a putt to win. I just haven't made anything of any length. It's unfortunate to win when somebody misses. I wish I could have made a
birdie. That would have been more fitting.”
The Australian player Senior did not make a 5-foot par putt when it lipped out on hole number 18. As for Lehman, he two-putted from 20
feet and made par. Lehman had a decent run going bogey less two days in a row at the first Champions Tour major of the season. After Lehman had claimed victory, both the players quickly walked over to shake each other’s hands.
Going into a playoff, both the players parred the first hole of the sudden death playoff at Shoal Creek. Both Senior and Lehman finished at 13-uinder par 275. With Senior failing to win the playoff, he posted a 68 whereas Lehman posted a three under par
69. The Australian player thought that it would go more to the left but then the ball just went straight. With things not really going his way, Senior was still content with his performance in the major.
Mark Calcavecchia who was leading in the third round posted a 75 in the final round to tie for fifth at nine under.
As for Lehman, he has now won his second Champions Tour major and fifth overall title on this tour. In 2010, he was triumphant at the Senior PGA Championship. Lehman defeated Fred Couples and David Frost in a playoff after he parred and both the players
double bogeyed.
