TWO PART QUESTION.......

first, how likely is it? i know there were tense times during the cold war but for some reason this seems different, the world i think is more unstable than it has been since the world war 2 era making this much more likely than anyone thinks.

second, could a confrontation between the two stay conventional or would it inevitably go nuclear??

  1. The answer is complicated. The world is indeed much more unstable now than during the cold war. It has been positively documented that over 90 battlefield nuclear warheads have gone missing from former USSR stocks. Who, when, where, and why are open questions.  Also large stocks of Chemical Weapons are no longer in Russian control. Fortunately the istans are more stable then the middle east. As for now the former KGB controls Russia and these people are used to getting their way by any means. I think it is likely that we will have to slap Putin down within the next 5 years.

68% likely that it will stay conventional; however, then would be a perfect time for the terrorists to do a NBC attack.

  2. It is very likely however it would not be derectly us vs russia it would more likely be russia invades an allie we have to protect and we sent troops while no formal declaration of war is made we would still be fighting one another similar to when the US fought China through vietnam. I don t belive it would go nuclear as everyone knows there is no winner there

  3. One more question about WW3. It is boring already.

  4. Very possible, and I think it would go Nuclear, the question is, do out Missile Defense systems stand up to the Nukes....?  I would hope that all the money we have dumped into star wars over the pst two decades would give us a leg up and knock those Commi Missiles out of the sky.

  5. Not likely BECAUSE it would inevitably go nuclear. That's why the Cold War ended with a fizzle, not a bang.

  6. I would suggest to read this :http://legacy.armscontrol.org/pdf/200711...

In short, there is enough weapon to destroy the earth.

  7. VERY UNLIKELY w/i the next 100 years.

No Nukes & No Conventional World War. That would result in a lose-lose for both countries in the prisoner's dilemma paradigm.

Rhetoric & baby steps. Modernized nations & their citizens have never been more stable/civilized. Sustained growth & open access to information is keeping all nations on an even keel.

With this said, we may be approaching a Quasi-Cold War. Nonetheless, we need to separate out "Putin & his Cronies' Ideology" vs. "The Russian People." The Russian citizens have a favorable view of America. Their issue is with their Communist government. There has been an explosion of Russian immigrants into the US.  The people are good, but the current Russian administration is testing the waters. They are nostalgic of the Cold War.

There is more than enough oil to go around for the next 100 years. In addition, alternative energy sources will soon erase oil's power.

    Two Things to Look For:

    1. Georgia's Outcome.

    a. If Georgia remains Independent, Russia is paper tiger.

    2. Poland's S.D.I. Program.

    a. If Russia continues rhetoric w/ no action, Russia is paper tiger. Russia will not, WILL NOT, air strike Polland once a US aligned S.D.I. program is installed.

    Cards are stacked against Russia.

If you're looking for action/chaos, check out Israel. They're going to send an air strike into Iran before year's end.

  8. They'd have to nuke some of our missile silos in Poland or something. I sure wouldn't want McCain finger on the button during such an event. MAD, mutually assured destruction will prevent this, I hope. Depends who is in charge.
