Do american citizens need a visa to visit france??

  1. When I lived in Europe (illegally I might add) I took trains all over the continent. I was never asked for a visa and I went through plenty of customs offices because I wanted the stamps for my passport. Americans are not generally considered to be the kind of people who want  to leave their home country permanently.  At least that is the general impression I got. That could be the way things really are or I could have just gotten a break.
