What makes American food is the history or it's invention and popularity in this country.  For example, fried chicken is an American food.  Some say apple pie is, but I suspect this recipe came with early settlers.  Creole food was established in South America and the Caribbean (places with a large Creole population) but was popularized by slaves in the American south (Louisiana in particular because of it's Creole heritage).  So it just depends.

Hot dogs.  

peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  It's amazing that so many people in the world have no idea how much peanut butter we eat.  My friend is from holland, and when she first moved here, she saw a peanut butter commercial and asked me:  "Why are they putting so much MUSTARD on that bread?"  lol.

Barbecued:  ribs, brisket, steaks, chicken.  Grilled meat, spread with a spicy, tomatoey, sometimes sweet sauce.

Chicken and dumplings

Coleslaw (shredded fresh cabbage, with mayonnaise, salt, sugar added, then refrigerated for a few hours....a salad)

I could go on forever.  We have so many regions...even the pizza is different depending on whether you are in New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles.  There are some foods like grillades and grits, that if you haven't visited the deep south, you probably will never have eaten those.
