Question:

American home canners: New canning jars don't fit our canners... Now what?

Just got ready to can 3 "runs" of green beans and discovered the new quart jars I bought don't fit my steam pressure canner. They're too big. After a little internet searching I've found the company that makes Ball, Kerr and Golden Harvest canning jars has converted quart jars to liters and they are larger. So I guess I now have to buy a new canner??? Are new canners made larger so liter jars will fit? Anybody else as angry about this as me?

  1. I think you could put a metal ring on the bottom, like a vegie steamer rack and go ahead and use the canner. As long as the jars aren't touching the bottom or each other it should still work. I think if that doesn't work it would be cheaper to go to some garage sales and pick up cases of the old size jars and just buy new lids and rings!!! I use the same jars over and over with new tops every year. Good luck.

  2. they probably dont manufacture the jars in this country anymore...just stamp thier name on them. (Made in China?)
