Question:

American in Honduras?

My husband asked me today what I thought about moving to Honduras. He wants to go in with a fellow american friend (who once lived in Honduras forn 10 yrs) and open a bar in a developing tourist area.

I'm wondering how safe it will be. We would live with them in their 14 room house. I've never even been out of the country...and I'm scared about living there.

I would like to hear from fellow americans who have lived in Honduras and their experiences, thanks!

  1. i think you should visit before you make your move, honduras is not for everyone, your dollar goes a long way, a nice place but like any other place keep your eyes open, and its not like the states, but you can learn to like it,they do have lots of americans retired their social security goes a long way, like i said visit first,

  2. As the other answers said, I too would recommend visiting first. It will give you an idea of what to expect if you did decide to go for it. Life in Honduras is very laid back, which can be very nice compared to life in the US. Due to that, though, things don't usually get done too quickly. That can be frustrating at times.

Safety is an issue, as is the case anywhere in the US or the world. As long as you make wise choices you should be just fine.

Where in Honduras is your husband planning to set up this bar? That would help in giving a better answer to this question. Good luck!

  3. I've lived in Honduras for a number of years now and traveled back and forth for ten years before that.  Safe?  No different than much of the rest of the world.  If you exercise the same cautions you would use anywhere else you will be fine.  It would be a good idea for you to visit first but that still doesn't prepare you for actually living here.  .

It can be an easy and relaxing life, inexpensive and laid back, the native people are friendly and helpful, but it is not for all people.  I know some type A folks who could not deal with the "manana (tomorrow)" attitude and moved on after spending some time here.
