my son will turn 3 beginning next year. we will be moving back to germany from the usa in fall.

1. how long of a time would you give your little one to adjust to the new country before you put him to kindergarten?

(i was thinking maybe when he is 3andhalf or 4)

2. he is almost 2andhalf, he speaks and understands german and english pretty good for his age, he started pretty early. maybe he doesn't speak as perfekt but better than a lot of other kids i know in his age. so i would say german and english isn't perfekt, but i don't think i can expect that from such a jung child.

now we are moving back and i wonder what is better. putting him in an american kindergarten where he can keep learning english and getting maybe perfekt or wether to put him in a german kindergarten so he can learn his mothertong perfect, also i think he will learn that anyways, as most people around him will speak english with him. but i wanna put him to a german school or preschool afterwards, what you think

  1. If you speak two languages at home, so will he. Be prepared for language development to slow down a little as he learns a new language. Eventually he will be bilingual. Especially if both parents speak to each other in both languages. Pick the kindergarten that will support the language you want.I would choose German.

  2. Why don't u look for a bilingual kindergarten? i think that'll be best, considering also the social aspect: there will be children with a similar / same situation. But mother language should be developed first and better then second language (he will count in their first language and German number system is different then English, which could be a problem in school, if he goes to german school) live in Austria, so i am familiar with German kindergarten too, and i must say that almost every German kindergarten have an English program, normally very well developed.

  3. wow, thats good at that age two be learning two diff. lanuages.  um.. if it was me and my son, I think I would go with learning my native lanuage.  But also keep watching to see if he is ready for that change,  maybe bring him in somewhere to make the 'transition' a little bit easier.  You will know after a few days , week maybe if he adjusts to it good or not.  and if not, then take it a little more slower.  My opinion is to learn your own native tongue first is great.  I wish I had that opportunity, its a lot easier when your young rather than older.

  4. thats really cool but ou need to give your child time to adjust to the change before you put him/her in kindergarden at all give your child more time besides putting him/her in kingergarden at 3.5 4ish is way to young i knoe kids that go to preschool until they are 6 not saying your child should go to preschool that long but he should still go 1 or 2 more years. This is what i think you should do put him/her in german preschool for 1 or 2 years then put in english kindergarden or wahtever then let him chose wether he/she wnts to continue with german or english or you could send him to english school but to german language class 1-4 times a month or vise versa
