Is it hard for an American Citizen to move and live in Australia for 1-3 years?

My father is an American citizen. my mother is a Papua new guinea citizen but has been a resident of the united states 4 over 15 years. I have joint citizenship.

Papua new Guineans can live in Australia very easily because of the closeness both geographically and politically.

What about 4 Americans? Does it depend upon where you live in Australia. we would want 2 live in cairns or Brisbane.

Both my parents have been to Australia extensively so that isn't a problem.

How hard would it be? Also how hard would it be for an American to get a work permit.
