American measures,compared to UK measures?

can anyone in the states explain why your gallon is different from ours?

ours I believe is 5.5 litres, and yours 3.78,how come?.

  1. Its just the way history came out.  I guess Americans had more wine barrels than ale barrels.

    The American gallon used to be called the wine gallon.  It was defined during the reign of Queen Anne, in 1706, as 231 cubic inches exactly (3 × 7 × 11 in).

    The Imperial (UK) gallon is based on the volume of 10 pounds of water at 62 °F.  This is a close approximation of the old (1694) "ale" gallon.
