No, it isn't. You have to change your money to Euros, but it's not that hard. If you go to the UK, you have to change to Pound Sterling.

First of all, "american money" is called the US Dollar. And it's not accepted in Ireland or the UK. You can find bureaus of change in major banks and in Ireland also in most Tourist Offices. Or you can just take out pounds or euros at the ATM.

In general, dollars will not be accepted. You may find a few hotels or tourist spots that accept them, but you don't want to use dollars even when someone will take them.  

When a store or hotel accepts foreign currency, they have to go through the trouble of taking it to the bank and converting it to local currency. Aside from the time involved, they have to pay fees to the bank. Plus, there is currency risk involved. Exchange rates change daily, so the dollars that they accept today may be worth less when they go to the bank tomorrow. Consequently, they will give you a really awful exchange rate to compensate them for the trouble of accepting dollars, the fees, and the currency risk.

Your money will go much further if you use credit cards wherever possible. You get a much better exchange rate with credit cards than you do with currency or travelers checks.

Convert dollars to local currency for situations where you can't use credit cards. The easiest way to do it is to take your ATM card and withdraw currency from ATMs. Cards that have a Visa or MasterCard logo are accepted everywhere. You'll get a better exchange rate than you will with travelers checks or cash and ATMs are open 24/7. Just be sure to call your bank and tell them that you are traveling. Otherwise, their security department may flag foreign transactions as "suspicious" and they'll cut your card off. You'll have no trouble as long as you call them in advance.

I have been using ATM cards for overseas travel for eleven years and don't miss travelers checks at all. I get much better exchange rates and its very convenient. If you don't have an ATM card, then  take travelers checks and convert them to local currency at banks.
