American right winger Patrick Dwyer re-signs with Carolina Hurricanes for two years
Patrick Dwyer, an American forward, who plays in the position of a centre, has been re-signed by the Carolina Hurricanes, which play in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The right winger has been given a two-year contract.
According to the team announcement which was made on Wednesday, the player would be paid $1.8 million for the deal, which means he would be paid $900,000 for one year. The contract would start from the season 2013-2014 as there is still one year left on
Dwyer’s last contract.
General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, Jim Rutherford mentioned it in a statement that Patrick is a very important part of their team and he is happy that he-signed as he fits in the team very well. He also hailed the player as a top penalty killer
and an assistant for forwards as he said,
"Patrick has been an excellent fit for our organization and plays an important role for our team. He is one of our top penalty-killers and provides speed for our forward lines."
In the 2002 NHL Draft, the 29-year-old player was selected in the fourth round by Atlanta Thrashers, selected at 116th overall. He kept playing for Western Michigan University until 2004-2005 season when he started playing for Gwinnett Gladiators
in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), before making his professional career debut for Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League (AHL).
He scored 16 goals, 29 assists and 45 total points in the 73 games for Wolves in the first season which was not a bad performance considering that it was his first season.
The Spokane, Washington, born player shifted to Albany River Cats in the AHL season to score 41 points in 79 matches, 25 points in 59 matches and 40 points in 62 matches in 2006-2007, 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 season respectively.
These performances earned him a call from Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL as he made his debut there in 2008-2009 season, scoring only one goal in the first season.
Overall he has featured in four seasons, 224 games for Hurricanes and scored 21 goals and 22 assists for 43 total points.
