American stars make good start at Ricoh Women's British Open 2012
American female golfers, who are trying to regain their lost glory on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour, made a good start at the ongoing Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012, being staged at
Royal Golf Club, Hoylake, United Kingdom.
Although two South Korean stars Haeji Kan and So Yeon Ryu hijacked the top spot at the end of the first round, it is hard to predict the final outcome as American contenders also look determined to steal the
show this time.
Americans Katie Futcher and Vicky Hurst both shot a 71 each in the first round, but South Koreans managed to take the lead.
In addition to Futcher and Hurst, Cristie Kerr and Paula Creamer have also done well in the first as they posted a 72 and 73 respectively.
Observers said that American stars must toughen up this time if they really want to get back to their winning ways once again. Despite a strong line-up, from top to bottom, predicting the final results is difficult
as European contenders are also seeking to keep the British Open title within their region.
Moreover, current world number one Yani Tseng is still regarded as a persistent threat to rivals. Tseng performed well in the first round of the major championship as she shot a 72.
Observers say that since the roster is loaded with talented LPGA stars, mostly from Asian countries, top-ranked American contenders are going to need to step up in a big way to ensure that the they rack up
the British Open title.
Creamer may not have clinched the title at Kingsmill Championship when all was said and done last Monday at Williamsburg, Virginia, where she locked horns with South Korean Jiyai Shin in sudden death playoff,
the LPGA phenom has what it takes to inflict defeat on rivals.
Satisfied with her performance in the first round of British Open 2012, Creamer said during her interview on Thursday that she has made a solid start and now she will focus on improving her overall score.
“I played really well all day.  I just had seven 3-putts or something.  But I think just like I said, I hit a lot of great shots, and I just couldn't really 2-putt out there.  I missed a lot of short putts,
even birdie opportunities, and that was the difference of being a great round and shooting 1-over,”  Creamer said.
