American toad Question?

What substrate should I use for my toad? Currently she is in soil which is free of pesticides and other chemicals. If she moves into a bigger tank (right now she's in 10 gal.) I will consider changing her substrate to wood chips. I'm not doing it now cuz I've had her for only three days and don't want to stress her... Any suggestions for substrate? She seems fine in the dirt...but may get impacted... Thanks!

  1. potting soils fine

    other substrates

eco earth (aka coco humus, coco coir)

    leaf litter

    organic potting soil

moss and barkchips shouldnt be used due to impaction and other health issues

  2. I have kept many toads, and I prefer a nicely planted terrarium, with a shallow water dish for soaking.

Use sturdy plants, as the toad will dig.

Don't use wood chips. Soil is not likely to cause impaction.

  3. if you put her on wood chips wont she get slivers or somthing?!?!
