I'm a 15yo American kid and I was wondering if you guys can explain something to me. How come a lot of British artists like Lilly Allen, The Monkeys and McFly as well as others release their songs all over the world except for in America? When a lot of American release their songs in the UK. I've only been able to hear a few UK artists on American radio, they are: Leona Lewis, The Beatles, Led Zepplin, Amy Winehouse, Elton John, MIA, Rolling Stones, Oasis and Pink Floyd. That's all I can think of right now.

p.s. - please only serious answers

  1. lilly allen is relased in australia ?

and im almost certain she was relased in america

  2. That's the US media for you, and that's a serious answer. You will be hard put to find any station, TV or radio, that seriously looks outside the US borders. They are very parochial and insular, despite not being an island. The UK, on the other hand, is so supine when it comes to the US. We are too ready to embrace all their rubbish.

    OK, pass the Big Mac!

  3. English bands find it hard enough to 'make it' over here, so to try and crack America is a lot of money for their promoters to be forking out on.

There are also the very few that have cracked America without making it big over here. The band Bush isn't heard of over here, and Natasha Beddingfield is known, but not a big star as she is in USA. Coldplay are big here, but USA absolutely LOVE them. Leona is another that is known here but loved there.

People like Robbie Williams and Oasis are Gods over here (dunno why!) but haven't cracked America. They have tried, but it just didn't work out-ie. it cost the company too much money to carry on promoting. In the same way bands like The Killers and Scissor sisters made it huge over here before America had heard of them.

Basically, it's down to money. If the USA love it, they will go over there. If not, then they stay here.

  4. well technically americans are British so its makes sense for them to sell there music in there true homeland.

  5. You can scour the Internet for them, can't you? So it's now much easier to get music from all over the world than it has ever been.

  6. I don't know, but I had trouble finding an artist from the Bahamas (K.B.) which is still under British rule. I bought some CD's when I was there, lost them & wanted to replace them. I've grown to love island music.

  7. I'm wondering why you chose to post this in the military section...

  8. I've been wondering the same thing!! I love to hear music from the UK! Actually, Oasis came out in the U.S. long after it did in the U.K, same thing with Leona, she was #1 in the U.S. months after she was in the U.K. We need more diverse music in the U.S.!! I always hear the same thing over and over on the radio and it's always music from the U.S.

Americans are music lovers, we want to hear it all!!!

Pink Floyd was huge in the U.S. but, while we were beginning to  listen to their big hits, U.K. and Europe had already been listening to it for months.

  9. To tell the truth I am not very sure about that Chris, lets hope it will improve and you will be able to hear them all.

  10. I agree with sanders. He has prety much nailed it. Once a group or song has hit #1 in EU. it then moves to the US. But unless they can repeat it a couple of time. They don't get the exposure and therefor won't do well on the American charts.

  11. I think it's because America isn't part of Europe... because to get famous or popular in America would be a big step. So, they focus on that further on in their music careers. :)

  12. The British music market is a lot easier to cater for.

Problem with America is that because its so d**n huge its hard to appeal to the east coast and at the same time music that appeals to the west coast in regards to tours, advertisement, promotion etc.

Its all about money, and for the 95% of bands who fizzle out in the 1st 3 years its easier to do it in Britain.

Britain is about 800 miles top to bottom with national radio stations.

America is about 4500 coast to coast

  13. Americans, while diverse, do not embrace new sounds all that easily;  they must first have the approval of a significant number of peers lest they be chastised- I know this from being quite a fan of Roxy Music a long while back. What a unique sound, I thought, my fellow stoners would have none of it except to say,"I haven't heard that on the radio, but it sounds OK."

  14. I think that America makes fun of british quite allot so british people dont send music over there or it could be that every one cant be botherd to send things to America untill the songs are older because led zepplin beetles are quite old bands amd the others aare like number ones.

    Hope this helps           :)
