American woods in Shanklin Isle of wight?

Why are the American woods on the Isle of wight called by this name .Is it because of there shape if so how did people know there shape years ago before aircraft.No one on the Island seems shore of the awnser.

  1. One theory is that wood was used to make ships during the American War of Independence in 1776 but it is also suggested that the name appears on the Andrews Map of the IOW in 1769.
    So not the US Army in any part of the 20th century.
