Americans, why do you rank the table differently?

Just wondering why are the American media ranking the olympic table by total medals just so USA can be top? Surely you should do it how the rest of the world does it, ranked by golds, then silvers, then bronzes. Because what your saying is that bronzes are equal to golds, and lets face it they aren't.

Because thats the way we've always done it, if other teams were ahead in the overall count and we were ahead in gold we would still do it by overall.
