Americans hope to end US Women's Open victory drought at Sebonack next year
American golfers, who took part in their national championship — US Women’s Open 2012 — with plenty of confidence but could not live up to the expectations of their golf crazy fans, have now set their sights on the next edition of the major tournament slated to be played at Sebonack.
This year’s edition of the US Women’s Open saw most of the American players falter on the course, as they could not do what the spectators expected them to do.
With Paula Creamer, a prominent American golfer, finishing tied for the seventh, most of the country’s contenders were seen struggling throughout the four days of the prestigious major event.
Analysts said that if US players keep performing grim at one of the most sensational events of the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour, they will definitely lose their credibility and the fans will likely become disillusioned with the sport.
They pointed out that since most of the Asian players have managed to dominate several of the top 50 positions in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, Americans’ past performances and successes have been overshadowed.
Now that another edition of the US Women Open has gone without having any American in the top 5, most of the local players are eyeing the next event set to be staged at Sebonack Golf Club, Southampton, in June 2013.
Mike Davis, who is the Executive Director of the US Golf Association, spoke to the media and expressed his confidence in American players. Davis said that it is a great opportunity for players to show their skills on a course that has never staged the US Women’s Open before.
“It is hard to believe we have never had this championship there,” said Davis.
Analysts said that American players, who appear too eager to end their US Open victory drought, are expected to face tough resistance from non-US players, especially Asians.
Moreover, it is more than likely that players from countries such as Taiwan, South Korea, China and Japan will continue to hold their ascendency against their rivals.
Brittany Lang, one of the American players in the US Open 2012 roster, said that she is very excited to learn that the next edition of the major tournament is going to be held at Sebonack.
“You feel like you're in the Greek Isles or something like that, it's so pretty out there,” said Lang.
