Here in the UK a litre of unleaded costs round about £1.15 these days.

That would make for close to £5 a gallon which I believe is abour $10?

  1. I'm in Connecticut, and gas here is around 4.17 a gallon.  But the problem is not the price.  Americans are very spoiled when it comes to gas, people drive everywhere, and want bigger and bigger cars for no reason.  So I'm sure in England, public transportation can take you anywhere you'd like to go and the cars are smaller too, which means a liter takes you a long way.  Sugar cane ethanol, anyone??  It's proven corn is not very "green".

  2. Mostly in the US right now, gas is upwards of $4.00.  Why are your gas prices so high and has anything been attempted to stop the high prices?

  3. And they're increasing in Australia too. We're about to hit $1.60 for a litre of unleaded (about 78p a litre or US$5.80 a gallon).

Our government is allegedly considering reducing or removing the GST (VAT - consumption tax) on petrol which is levied on top of normal tax. Watch this space (but don't hold your breath).

The price of petrol in the UK is EVIL :(

ukok you are right about public transport - I once set out in Fort Myers, Florida, to take a bus just to see how much hassle it would be. My daughter's grandparents warned me not to, but I wouldn't listen! I only wanted to go to the closest shopping mall, just a couple of miles down the highway. I waited and waited and eventually a stinky, filthy bus turned up and the driver had a wire cage over his cab to stop hold-ups. The bus was heaving with the "dispossessed" - people too poor to afford their own transport, and you could see from the "facilities" provided just how little society generally cared about them. Then, you had to take your life in your hands to cross the highway to get home again. America is also not planned with pedestrians in mind any more than public transport, and there were no pedestrian crossings - so you had to play chicken at the crossroads with the huge lorries and impatient car drivers. I would NEVER risk that trip again if I ever revisit the US - I have a young child to consider!

Edit again: PRH, you might want to ask this question again in a few hours. In most of the US it's the middle of the night, so you're only going to get the night owls answering!

(almost 6pm here on the east coast of Australia)

  4. In Europe we are all trying to keep to kyoto promises and of course the goverment has  a good excuse to keep taxing us. The only thing you can say in defense of the difference between us and the us of a, is that they tend to need the cars a lot more, have a lot more ground to cover (just doing a pub crawl in most cities involves a 10 minute walk between bars) and historically their engines have been bigger.  I think its fair to say that most european countries have a far more efficient public transport system than in america.

  5. $4.15 for regular unleaded and climbing as much as 25 cents in one day ... day after day, after day.

Our government gave a lot of our good paying jobs to Mexico and other countries ... which has left many of us Americans with out employment. Our econemy is bad. Groceries are getting more expensive to buy and it's not good here. Elderly people have stood in line at jewelery stores, trading in their family heirlooms for money. I've seen this. Others are selling personal belongings in neighborhood sales. Our Manufacturing Industry is very slow because of the economic condition ... lay offs are in the 10s of thousands each month as reports come out.

The Home Forclosures here? Well, if a person loses his/her job, they certainly cannot make their house payment now, can they?

America has always appeared to be a great place because we payed taxes in abundance and our country was prospering. Not anymore! - Way too much money has gone to fight a war in Iraq that has never been justified. Amrerica is in deep financial debt. - The government wont say "Recession" yet ... I think their waiting for it to become a DEPRESSION, then they'll say "recession."  You know how THAT goes.

My best to you and all of the UK! Peace!

  6. yay.  I live in El Paso.

"Travelers across Texas will see the highest prices ever for gasoline at the pump as they head into the three-day Memorial Day weekend.

The state's cheapest gas can be found in El Paso at $3.67 a gallon, up 4 cents from last week."

--ya, steady creeping up.  I'm sure it will be around $4.00 within 6 weeks
