If you are American living outside the US, are you used to the Metric system?

kilometers, meters, centimeters, kilograms, grams, liter and most importantly, temperatures in Celsius??

How long did it take you to get used to these measurement?

Do you agree that the Metric and Celsius degrees are easier and more logical?

  1. Not as long as you might think. When you are surrounded by the people who don't understand what a gallon is, you soon look for equivalents. When it gets old that you have to describe things with your hands, it just clicks.

Now we think metric and revert when we're home. The brain *can* handle those speeds!

    Much more logical...

  2. Most of us are taught the metric system as well as our other system. So no, it's not hard to learn.....it's actually way easier than our system.

We don't ever use Celcius, and rarely kilometers, but we are taught meters, centimeters, kilograms, liters, etc...

We use centimeters a lot for small measurements.

  3. Yes, everything is in metric scale outside the USA, it didn't take long at all, I was sent to go to school in Australia rather than in the USA. The metric system is a lot more logical and is more accurate to scale.

  4. It did not take very long to adjust to the metric system. Volume was pretty easy since you can buy leters here in the US. Milk, soda, ect... So there was an easy comparison. Distance didn't take to long to pick up since a kilometer was just a little bigger then a half mile (0.6mi). The only thing that I never got used to was weight, then again I have always been bad a guessing weights so maybe it was just me.

I think the easist way to learn it was to just embed yourself in the system and take a leter for being a leter rather then trying to compare it to its standard equivlent back in the US.

Is the Metric system more logical.... in some ways yes. It is easier to understand that 1000 meters is going to be a kilometer because of the system compared to the US standard where you have so many ounces in a pound.

If you ever have questions about conversions, talk to any drug dealer. Those guys are always converting things from grams to ounces to kilos to who knows what. Kinda sad isn't it?
