Americans make solid start at Kingsmill Championship
American contenders put up a tough fight in the first round of Kingsmill Championship as four of them finished inside the top 10 at the end of the day at Williamsburg, Virginia.
Although the Kingsmill Championship roster is loaded with competent LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) contenders, American stars are being expected to shine on their soil this time.
Thanks to much-needed crowd support and good weather conditions early on the first day, key American players managed to post good scores.
Paula Creamer, who is being regarded as one of the hot favourite contenders for the title, looked in a great form as she carded a 65 to tie for the third spot along with three other players.
Creamer is being expected to keep the momentum going in the next three rounds, but it remains to be seen how the LPGA titan faces the growing pressure from her rivals.
The American prodigy spoke to the media, sharing her thoughts about her performance in the opening round.
Creamer said that she did not lose momentum and managed to score well early. She said that the weather started to trouble players in the final hours as darkness stopped the match later.
“The rain delays, they come and go. It's one of those things that you've kind of got to use your experience from the past. And obviously I didn't make any more birdies on the back side, but I still played really well, gave myself some chances. It's been a long day and I'll still take a 65, that's for sure,” Creamer said.
On the other hand, Another rising American star, Christina Kim, also displayed a stellar performance, as she shot a 66 to tie for the seventh position along with three other contenders.
The first round had to be suspended due to bad light, which means that those who were not able to tee off on Thursday will kick off the tournament on Friday morning.
Kim expressed her confidence in her game, saying she kept her cool on all the holes and did her best on Thursday. She also appreciated other contenders in the roster for their efforts and commitment to Kingsmill Championship.
“It's very special to be back because these people, they know what they're doing. They love their golf, they're passionate about it, they're thankful to have us here,” the American golfer said.
