Americans spoil home debut of Coppin State Eagles – Volleyball News
The Physical Education Complex in Baltimore, Maryland hosted the debut match of the Coppin State Eagles on Wednesday, September 7. They were challenged by the American University Girls’ volleyball squad who outdid the home team in straight sets. The visiting
team proved to be better in every aspect of the game and hit the mark with a 3-0 (25-16, 31-29, and 25-17) victory.
Ariel Richard of Coppin State topped her previous career high of 13 kills against Chicago State and collected a career-high 15 kills. Likewise, Christina Epps was credited with a season-high 10 kills but overall the Eagles failed to put up a good fight against
the Americans. Sara Rishell was the key player for the Americans as she had 15 kills with a hitting percentage of .571. Her team-mate Morgan Hendrix added points via eight kills in the match.
Americans not only showed their attacking power but also did a great job at defence. They were better than Coppin State Eagles by a 8-3 block ratio.
First set
Coppin State opened the game with good energy and tried to put pressure on the rival side. However, the formula did not seem to work as the Americans offered strong resistance. They responded to the early strike of the home team with convincing counter attacks.
Ariel Richard hit the ball from different angles and claimed the first few points for Coppin State. Sara Rishell was equally active on the other side of the net. She put away the ball in gaps and managed to steal quick points from the Eagles. The first set
swiftly inched its way to the end and showed the winning status of Americans. First set was closed with the difference of 9 points and home squad suffered the set-back.
Second set
The loss of opening set aggravated the local team. They formed new combinations and came up with strong offensive attack in the second set. In response, Americans defended well and tried to maintain their dominance in the game. As a result, the game turned
into a tight contest. Long rallies were exchanged and each side struggled to take lead. American were ahead of Eagles until the score was levelled at 24-all on a kills by Salena Weekly. Taking advantage of the opportunity, home team made further progress and
jumped to 25-24 with Schimitt’s kill. The next attack error by Coppin State once again tied the score at 25-all. Afterwards, the game progressed in the the same fashion and situation remained unclear until the final whistle of the referee. Coppin State had
the chance of winning the second set but last minute errors caused them the loss of another set. Americans extended their lead to 2-0 by winning second set at 31-29.
Third set
