Americans sweep the podium in men’s Slopestyle Final at 2012 Burton Canadian Open
American snowboarder Chas Guldemond’s trip to Calgary, Alberta, turned out to be a successful one as he defeated some of the best snowboarders from around the world on Saturday, February 4, to clinch victory in men’s Slopestyle Final at the 5Star Burton
Canadian Open.
Finishing just a few points behind Guldemond was his fellow countryman Justin Morgan, whereas Brandon Reis rounded out the top-three to make it all-American podium sweep.
With snowboard slopestyle getting added to the Winter Olympics line-up and all set to make its debut at 2014 Sochi Games in Russia, the progression of the sport had picked up pacer even further. The 16-men Final that went down on Saturday highlight just
how far the riders had come in slopestyle and featured a handful of phenomenal performances, completely justifying all the efforts that had been put into earning the sport an Olympic status.
The 24-year-old Guldemond emerged as the show-stealer during men’s Slopestyle Final, putting on a spectacular performance in his second run to seal the fate of the contest in his favour. The run featured a front-side lip-slide, back-side 180 to 260 out,
half cab 180 back-side 180, switch back-side 900, back-side double cork 1080, back-side rodeo 900 and a cab 27. The solid run allowed him to post an 89.60 on the score-board, which held until the end to put him at the highest spot on the podium.
“This is a complete turnaround from last year. I felt really good and was really stoked on the event,” said Guldemond. “The weather was great and is the best I’ve ever experienced at a contest. This was an awesome contest and Burton took good care of us.”
Morgan put on a remarkable fight during the contest, but failed to edge past his compatriot and thus had to settle for runner-up place. His best run comprised of 87.30 points comprised of a front-side board-slide, front-side 270 to 450 out, board-slide to
fakie, switch back-side 900, front-side 180, double back-side rodeo 900 and 360 in to disaster 270 out to whole jam to front-flip.
Reis was the third American to land on the podium after executing a back-side lip-slide, back-side 189 to switch nose-press 180 out, board-slide to front-side board-slide to fakie out, switch front-side 720, switch back-side 900, back-side 900 and a switch
board-slide to pole jam back-side 360 during his best run to score an 81.03 off it.
Guldemond registered his first score of the TTR World Tour to sit on 63rd spot in the TTR Men’s Slopestyle World Tour Rankings. He also moved to fifth place in the Burton Global Open Series, where Reis maintained his place on top in the rankings
due to his podium finish at the latest event.
