  1. Individuals in France are no better or worse than individuals in America and just as varied in their beliefs, attitudes and prejudices.

I visit France regularly and have no problem with people there.

This is not to say that fools cannot be found in both countries but there is no point in either exaggerating the numbers or being overly concerned about a possible encounter with such a person.

  2. We, the french, eat americans!!!!lol I joke, Rillifane is 100% right. If you comme in France, have fun ;o)

  3. I can only reiterate what the first two posters have said. Make an effort to adapt instead of expecting everyone to adapt to you, and if you meet a jerk (which can happen anywhere as you'll presumably agree), avoid dismissing the entire population based on one negative experience. Mostly I would offer this simple bit of advice: relax. French people who are hostile towards Americans or foreigners in general are the minority. Plenty of people are more than happy to help and chat. Have a great trip!

  4. I agree somewhat with the first answer - it is hard to generalize.  Just like you can find Americans who have issues with 'foreigners', you'll find French people who don't like Americans.

From what I have seen/heard, a lot of issues occur when you get a tourist who has not attempted to learn some of the basics of communication with whatever culture he/she is visiting.   Just like in the US, not everyone will want to take time to help someone who can't be understood.

I think if you show that you've made an effort to learn the language and don't call unnecessary attention to yourself (being overly loud, making public derogatory statements about your host country, etc), you'll be fine in a majority of situations.
