America’s Quantum Racing wins 2012 52 Super Series regatta – Sailing Update
American TP52 boat, Quantum Racing performed consistently in the later part of the 2012 52 Super Series which paid them back and they were able to claim the overall title of the regatta compiling 14 points as they was no racing on the final day of the regatta.
Quantum Racing did not have a good start in the event as they clinched three third-podium finishes in the first three races which dragged them down. However, a bullet in the fourth races brought them up on the second position.
The American teams displayed some outstanding sailing skills on the third day proceedings and claimed two bullets which secured the top podium place for them. Italy’s Audi Azzurra Sailing Team scored the same points on the table but due to their lower finishes
on the third day, they were placed on the second podium.
The fleet was anxious to start the regatta on the final day but there was not enough breeze to have a complete sail on the Barcelona waters. The race committee decided to conclude the regatta on the basis of third day results which proclaimed the American
team the champions. It seemed that luck was in their favour this time.
Italian team was in a strong position to challenge Quantum Racing for the top spot as they were having the same points and were also in good form but unfortunately the lack of breeze became the reason of their defeat.
On the other hand, former standings leader, Sweden’s Ran clinched the third position with 16 points. At one time, Ran was in the lead and it seemed that they will retain their lead until the finish of the regatta but two lower finishes on the third day nudged
them down on number three spot.
Overall standings at the end of the regatta:
1. Quantum Racing (USA) 3, 3, 3, 1, 2, 1, 1 = 14 points
2. Audi Azzurra Sailing Team (ITA), 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 2, 3 = 14 points
