Ami Matsuo and Corey Main win swimming events: Day two – 2011 Commonwealth Games
Ami Matsuo of Australia and Corey Main of New Zealand
surged into the finals of Women’s 50m freestyle and Men’s 50m back-stroke respectively, on day two of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games on September 10, in Isle of Man.
The Australian champion, Matsuo proved her dominance for gold crown of the event, by clocking a top ranked time of 25.19 seconds. Her time was just 0.03 seconds faster than her following swimmer and team-member, Adelaide Hart, who reached the podium for
silver medal, by posting a time of 25.22 seconds.
Similarly, the arena witnessed an intensive battle between Marne Erasmus of South Africa and Sophie Smith of England, who engaged each other in a neck-to-neck race for the third spot of the swim. The 16-year-old Erasmus managed to out-touch her closest competitor
and stepped on the victory stand for third position, by reporting a time of 25.86 seconds. Smith remained only 0.01 seconds behind her and completed her sprint in a time of 25.87 seconds for fourth position.
In the meantime, the gold medallist of Women’s 200m IM at the same championship, Sophie Smith, appeared on the finishing wall with a fourth fastest time of 25.87 seconds. Smith was trailed by Kyla Ferreira of South Africa, who remained 0.35 seconds slower
than her and ended her swim in a time of 26.22 seconds. Laura Vertigans of England was the sixth finest swimmer of the event, as she posted a time of 26.23 seconds.
Moments later, Main made an astonishing impact on the arena by winning the title of the Men’s back-stroke event with a timing of 25.24 seconds. He was followed by Grant Halsall of Isle of Man, who remained only 0.08 seconds away from the champion and concluded
his swim in 25.32 seconds. Halsall was in a lead of 0.06 seconds over Robert Gerlach, who reached the podium for bronze medal with a timing of 25.38 seconds.
Meanwhile, Zahir Gamiet of South Africa claimed fourth position of the event, by posting a time of 25.70 seconds. Olamelako Coker of England was the fifth fastest finisher of the event, as he completed his single-lap back-stroke swim in a time of 25.80 seconds.
Coker was 0.23 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Dylan Carter of Trinidad and Tobago, as he submitted a time of 26.03 seconds.
In addition, the arena was impressed with the gruelling efforts of all participants in their respective events. Furthermore, podium finishers were awarded medals for their notable efforts in single-lap events after the completion of the session.
