Amini Fonua clinches Men’s 50m breaststroke gold: Day three - Oceania Swimming Championships
Amini Fonua of Tonga clinched gold medal of the Men’s 50m breaststroke on day three of the 2012 Oceania Swimming Championships in Noumea, New Caledonia on Thursday, May 31.
Fonua gave no chance to his opponents and stifled their hopes by securing gold medal of the discipline. With his stupendous efforts, he sustained his finest qualification spot of the discipline and tapped the finishing blockade for the title of the discipline.
He continued his impeccable pace throughout the single lap discipline and touched the wall for gold medal with the timing of 28.80 seconds.
The champion was followed by Nikolas Pregelj of Australia, who stayed 0.49 seconds apart and settled on the victory stand for silver medal by submitting a time of 29.29 seconds.
The silver medallist was chased by Pregelj’s team-member, Nicholas Schafer, who stayed 0.45 seconds apart and earned bronze medal of the event by reporting a time of 29.74 seconds.
The third position holder was trailed by Matthew Glassford of New Zealand, who stayed 0.98 seconds slower and completed his swim in a time of 30.72 seconds for fourth position.
Fifth fastest spot of the discipline was secured by Meli Malani of Fiji Islands, who was 0.19 seconds apart made his way to the finishing wall with an effort of 30.91 seconds.
Malani was chased by Eli Ebenezer Wong of Northern Mariana Islands, who stayed half body length slower from his foregoing finisher and emerged on the wall as sixth position holder with the timing of 31.54 seconds.
Seventh position of the discipline was secured by Jeremy Verlaguet of France, who stayed just 0.08 seconds apart and hit the finishing end with the timing of 31.62 seconds.
The French swimmer was followed by Ian Bond Wolongkatop Nakmai of Papua New Guinea, who remained 0.12 seconds apart and finished eighth in the event with the timing of 31.74 seconds.
In addition, the session ended after the conclusion of all planned events while the position holders received awards and accolades for their notable efforts at the medal ceremony of the championship. Furthermore, the championship will end on June 1.
