Amini Fonua dominates Men’s 50m breaststroke heats: Day three - Oceania Swimming Championships
Amini Fonua of Tonga dominated the preliminary rounds of Men’s 50m breaststroke on third day of the 2012 Oceania Swimming Championships in Noumea, New Caledonia on Thursday, May 31.
Fonua demonstrated his stupendous efforts in the one-lap breaststroke discipline and made his way into the playoff as top contender for gold medal.
He faced tough competition from Nikolas Pregelj of Australia throughout the discipline but with his immaculate efforts, he managed to outperform him over the finishing end for first position. Fonua posted a time of 29.76 seconds for the top qualification
spot of the race.
His strongest competitor, Pregelj stayed just 0.03 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and hit the finishing blockade as second fastest swimmer with the timing of 29.79 seconds.
Third finest qualification spot of the event was secured by Nicholas Schafer of Australia, who stayed nearly 0.20 seconds apart and hit the finishing wall with an effort of 29.97 seconds.
Subsequently, Schafer was chased by Jeremy Verlaguet of Nouvelle-Caledonie, who was 1.57 seconds apart and emerged on the finishing wall as fourth best finisher with the timing of 31.54 seconds.
Fifth position of the discipline was secured by Matthew Glassford of New Zealand, who suffered a deficit of 0.03 seconds from his foregoing finisher and clocked a timing of 31.57 seconds.
Similarly, Glassford remained just a stroke ahead of Ian Bond Wolongkatop Nakmai of Papua New Guinea, who proved his eligibility for sixth position of the discipline by submitting a time of 31.67 seconds.
Seventh best qualifying position of the discipline was secured by Meli Malani of Fiji Islands, who stayed 0.15 seconds behind and reported a time of 31.82 seconds.
Finally, the audience witnessed exhausting efforts of Eli Ebenezer Wong of Northern Mariana Islands, who secured eighth best spot of the discipline by reporting a time of 31.97 seconds.
The spectators applauded for forceful efforts of all participants in the preliminary round of the 50m event while these finalists will compete with each other in the playoff to secure top spot on the podium. Furthermore, the session concluded after the completion
of all planned events.
