Amir Khan: Boxing is not a sport for thugs – Boxing News
British-Pakistani boxer Amir Khan thinks boxing is not being managed the way it should be. Khan’s comments came in as a criticism over David Haye and Dereck Chisora’s public brawl for which Chisora received an indefinite ban.
Khan said that boxing is not a sport for thugs and then he shed light over how this sport can reduce crime rate in towns. He particularly spoke about his own gym in Bolton, revealing that the local crime rate has reduced since he has given kids the opportunity
to stay off the streets and engage in a sport that is exciting as well as aggressive, pacifying every human urge.
Khan stated, “(Boxing) It’s not a sport for thugs and the critics who say the whole sport of boxing is bad, you can’t say that two guys brawling can’t make the whole sport bad.”
Praising the sport, he said, “Boxing has sorted out the lives of many people by taking them off the streets. Look at my gym here in Bolton, we’ve taken so many kids off the streets. This area used to be a really deprived area where they used to be a lot
of trouble. But the crime rate is down because kids are in the gym burning off their energy, doing something positive with it.”
He added that he believes boxing disciplines a person and since it is the toughest sport in the world, no one should disrespect it. Khan himself is a very cool-minded fighter who tries to keep his aggression out of the game. He further said that everyone
around knows that he is a nice guy and that he does charity, he talks to people around without taking their status in consideration and that he will never do what Chisora did in a press conference.
Khan said that the most he will do in a press conference is what he did to Malignaggi (Khan pushed him). He said he would never punch his opponent in a press conference since that is something to do in the ring.
Khan is scheduled to fight Lamont Peterson on May 19 at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.
