Amir Khan: I want to take care of Garcia before moving up in weight – Boxing News
Former IBF and WBA super lightweight champion Amir Khan wants to move up in weight but he wants to take care of Garcia first. Khan is currently scheduled to face Garcia on July 14 and he will also be the one to carry the Olympic Torch through Bolton, his
hometown.
Talking about his fight against Garcia and his future plans, Khan said, “Garcia's a great champion, and an unbeaten fighter, and I want to take care of him, and then move up to 147 [welterweight]. Then I'll probably have one more fight at 147 before I go
on to the big, big names like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. But one step at a time. I've got ambitions in life to face the best, like Floyd Mayweather, but it's a waiting game at the moment, I've got Garcia in front of me at the moment and I'm 100 per
cent focused on him.”
In his interview last week, Khan said that he wants to face better opponents once he moves up in weight. Khan believes he can be the one to end Floyd Mayweather’s unbeaten streak next year. Earlier this year, Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions announced
that Khan vs. Mayweather might happen in 2013, only if Khan proves himself worthy of facing Mayweather.
For now, the British Pakistan pugilist believes he can beat Danny Garcia, who comes in with an unbeaten streak as well. For Khan, this is a major fight, as he has to prove his mettle to the world. After this last fight against Lamont Peterson, most boxing
fans around the world doubt Khan’s capabilities as a boxer. Therefore, Khan wants to beat Garcia to once again lift up his brand to the acme of success.
Khan was scheduled to fight Lamont Peterson in a rematch on May 19 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. However, after Peterson was tested positive for having steroids in his blood, the match was cancelled. Khan now wants the IBF to ban Peterson from the sport
so that no one else tries to follow his footsteps.
