Amir Khan: I was lucky to get the Garcia fight – Boxing News
Former IBF and WBA super lightweight champion Amir Khan believes he was lucky to get a fight against a pugilist like Danny Garcia on such a short notice. Khan and Garcia are scheduled to face each other on July 14 in Las Vegas. The venue of the match is
not decided yet.
Khan was originally scheduled to fight Lamont Peterson for the IBF and WBA super lightweight titles. However, after Peterson failed a drug test recently, the match was cancelled and Khan was left with no options. At the eleventh hour, Khan’s camp contacted
Garcia, who initially wanted to fight Khan only if Khan was able to get his titles back through his appeal with the IBF. However, now Garcia is all ready to rock the stadium against the British Pakistan boxer.
In his recent interview, Khan spoke about his fight against Garcia. He said, “I was lucky to get the Garcia fight. If that fight hadn’t happened, it is Ramadan the following week, so I would have been out until September. That would have meant that I would
have been out of the game for 10 months because of Lamont Peterson.”
When asked about his preparations after the match with Peterson was cancelled, Khan said, “I was still going to the gym and training, I even did on the morning I was told the fight was off. It was my dad who told me. I was really angry when I went to the
gym that day and sparred six rounds. I’d even gone for a run on the treadmill that morning, too. To be honest, I didn’t know what to do.”
Khan has filed an appeal with the IBF to return his titles to him by calling his December bout against Peterson a ‘No Contest’. Khan has even pledged the commission to ban Peterson for life from the sport, as he thinks Peterson’s act of taking drugs would
encourage others to do the same too.
For now, Khan is still upset on Peterson for his positive drug test, as Khan had prepared hard for the rematch to get his titles back.
