Amir Khan: My plan is to move up to 147 and face one of the big names up there – Boxing News
Former IBF and WBA super lightweight champion Amir Khan is looking beyond his fight with Danny Garcia. Khan is scheduled to face Garcia on July 14, but the Briton insists that he is looking beyond light welterweight and that he wants to fight at welterweight.
In his recent interview, the British-Pakistani boxer said, “My plan is to move up to 147 and face one of the big names up there. You've got Victor Ortiz, you've got Manny and Mayweather. There are super names there so I'll be in that mix and we'll sit down
with (trainer) Freddie Roach and see what route we're going to take with the big names.”
While Khan wants to fight Mayweather next year or this fall, he thinks it would be better for him to go slow and steady. When asked if he will fight Manny Pacquiao, his friend and training partner, Khan immediately rejected the notion. He said, “I'll never
fight Manny Pacquiao. We get on quite well, me and Manny are good friends. I don't think Freddie would be happy if we fought each other in the ring.”
Both, Pacquiao and Khan, are trained by Hall of Famer trainer Freddie Roach, which makes it uncomfortable for Khan to take on a fighter from his training camp.
Asked about Danny Garcia and the Briton replied saying that it is a bit early for Garcia to fight him but considering that Garcia is a world champion, Khan said he believes it will be a good fight. He added that this would be the first defeat of his career,
as Garcia comes in the ring with an unbeaten streak.
Khan’s bout against Garcia was set after his rematch against Lamont Peterson was cancelled. Peterson failed a random drug test due to which he was unable to get a fighting license. Khan, who was eager to regain his titles, which he lost to Peterson in December,
last year, was highly depressed with Peterson’s drug test news. According to Khan, he had prepared hard for the fight and he was all ready to give it hard to Peterson in the ring.
