Amir Khan appoints Virgil Hunter as coach – Boxing News
Briton fighter Amir Khan has finally made the decision of hiring American trainer Virgil Hunter as his new coach, as reported by Daily Mail, UK. Hunter, who trained Andre Ward to become one of the best fighters today, had previously spoken of working with
Khan but shrugged off the rumours of any contract between the two.
Khan was previously under Hall of Famer Freddie Roach’s guidance. However, his recent knockout loss to American unbeaten fighter Danny Garcia led him to end terms with Roach. Khan is now looking forward to working with a new trainer to revamp his fighting
skills.
A few days back, while talking about Khan, Hunter asserted, “Amir is very talented and an exceptional offensive boxer.
“But there are some aspects that need correcting. Personally I don’t think that would be too difficult to achieved and then he should be able to regain his position as a world champion.”
Nevertheless, Hunter shared the same opinions as of Freddie Roach when asked about Khan’s ability of taking punches.
“One thing they do need to is keep him away from big punchers for the moment.”
Following his WBO title loss to Garcia, Khan revealed that he needs to work on his defence strategies. However, the Bolton proud blamed Freddie Roach for his loss, saying the Hall of Famer is unable to give him enough time to work on his flaws. Khan, who
was considerably a close friend of Filipino fight sensation Manny Pacquiao, showed a different side of his this time.
Khan asserted that he no longer wants to be the ‘second priority’ in his training camp. According to the former unified IBF and WBA titlist, Roach has always been more concerned about Pacquiao than him.
It should be noted here that Roach was not hesitant in admitting the fact that he indeed keeps Pacquiao as his first priority. In fact, Roach went onto say that he will always have Pacquiao as number one because the Filipino has earned his place.
Khan soon notified the press that he has fired Roach and is looking for a new trainer. Speculations of the Briton hiring Virgil Hunter were already on the rise and now they have come true!
