Amir Khan as One of the Contenders for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award– Can He Win It?
This is truly amazing, not only for Amir Khan, but also for the British boxing fans and Pakistani boxing fans who love and support Amir Khan for hoisting the flag of both the countries. For Britain, this might not be big news but folks in Pakistan are quite
excited to learn that Amir Khan has been shortlisted among 9 other personalities for BBC Personality of the Year award. What’s even more exciting for both the nations is the fact that Amir is the only ‘boxer’ among all 10 candidates.
The list was announced by BBC One’s One Show on 29 November, 2011. The list was created by regional and national sports’ editors. The 58th BBC Sports Personality of the Year show will be hosted by Sue Barker, Jake Humphrey and Gary Lineker. It
will be broadcasted live on 22nd December, from MediaCityUK, Salford.
Other sports personalities in the list include golfers, Darren Clarke, Rory Mcllroy and Luke Donald, cricketers, Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook, athletes, Mo Farah and Dai Greene, Mark Cavendish, a cyclist, and Andy Murray, a tennis player.
The list was followed with intense anguish and anger from the sportswomen of Britain since the panel of editors did not consider any sportswoman good enough to be shortlisted. Many of them used social media to express their anger and dismay while some used
interviews and TV shows to express their views.
Amir’s Achievements...
Those who are wondering why Amir Khan was nominated must know that he was selected as the British Boxer of the Year in November 2011. Khan has also won a silver medal in the 2004 Olympics. He currently holds the unified WBA (Super) and the IBF light welterweight
championship titles. He is a British Pakistani professional boxer with 26 wins and 1 loss in his portfolio, complemented by the fact that 18 of his victories came through knockouts.
Will He Win It?
That is the ultimate question being asked right now! The list is quite competitive. For instance, Luke Donald, the golfer, has maintained his performance well in recent years. Andrew Strauss, the cricketer, has been playing well recently and has become quite
a sensation.
Amir, on the other hand, also had a great year. He defeated Marcos Maidana from Argentina and the undefeated European champion, Paul McCloskey. Currently, Amir Khan is one of the most talked about boxers. He has created a buzz in the world of boxing and
has been challenging Manny, Mayweather and Timothy to bouts. With all of this in mind, it can be said that Amir is a strong contender to win than others and can lead the way up. But, his chances of winning the award are rare since he is quite young. It is
being anticipated that Amir won’t win the award since he hasn’t faced any of the major fighters of the world to date such as Manny, Mayweather, Robert and Timothy. Most critics are of the view that Amir needs to do more in order to go up the ladder and establish
