Amir Khan at the brink of breaking or making his career – Boxing Special
After suffering a devastating knockout at the hands of Danny Garcia, former IBF and WBA light welterweight titlist Amir Khan is looking beyond his options to ensure he rises up again.
Khan lost his WBA title for the second consecutive to an American, more likely an underdog American. Now, the Bolton proud finds himself on the brink of making or breaking his career. Surely, after Garcia’s brilliant left hook to the neck, not many would
be in their senses. As much as Khan feels dismantled, he wants to ensure he sets everything right for the future.
“I'm going to look at my options. I'll sit down with my team this week and see where we go from there. I'm happy with Freddie but there are things I want to change, so I'll speak to my team and see how they feel,” said Khan while talking about bringing real
time changes to his training regime and camp in order make things better.
Khan lost his unified IBF and WBA light welterweight titles to Lamont Peterson in December last year. Back then, the Briton had the referee, the judges, the mysterious man and then the steroids to blame. However, this time, it seems like Khan has ran out
of options to blame. Although he claims he is taking all the blame, he is still indicating towards the mistakes made by his trainer Freddie Roach, especially when it comes to not giving him enough time.
“Freddie's a good trainer, I'm taking the blame, it was my fault. But there were things we should not have done in training camp. We'll sit down and talk through that. I'm not blaming anyone, I'm not pointing the finger, I made mistakes in the ring,” Khan
added when asked about his training and the blunders he made in the ring.
Khan’s loss to Garcia not just marked the end of his supremacy at the light weight division, but also became a reason for others to call him a write-off, at least fellow Briton fighter Carl Froch did that. It is not astounding for Khan to face such remarks,
as he has been through all of it before as well when he was knocked out by Breidis Prescott.
Garcia’s knockout is the second knockout of Khan’s portfolio and his third defeat. At the age of 25, the Briton has become ex-champion thrice, leaving room for no more mistakes.
Khan’s emotional outburst and his lack of understanding Garcia’s game plan in the ring cost him his title. Nevertheless, the British-Pakistani pugilist played too naive and fell prey to the unbeaten American’s vicious blows. Garcia was waiting, waiting for
Khan to pitch in so he can thrash him left to right and that is exactly what Khan went for.
To a certain extent, Khan thought his speed would overpower Garcia but he forgot to realise the fact that Garcia’s punching power is way more than his. No matter how speedy Khan gets, if he cannot hit, he will not survive Garcia even in the future. Besides,
as Angel Garcia already noted, Khan’s weak chin is his Achilles’ heels and Garcia knows well how to capitalise on it.
If Khan gets a rematch against Garcia, he needs to make sure he gives Garcia tough time in the ring or else he will be ending his career.
