The war between Amir Khan and Paulie Malignaggi at last came to an end when both of them met at the WaMu Theatre in Madison Square Garden for the World Boxing Association Super Lightweight title. Defending Champion Khan (22-1, 16 KO’s) defeated Malignaggi (27-3, 5 KO’.s) at the 1:25 mark in the 11th round. The atmosphere in the arena was electrifying due to their weeks of verbal attacks and full scale brawl. Flags of Pakistan and England were being waived by the crowd for Amir Khan, while American and Italian Flags were seen for Paulie Malignaggi support. Both the boxers were waiting to pounce at their opponent and the arena was the perfect setting for the fight.
The first round was a fragmentary matter as each fighter was eager to show their lightning speed and their striking power. The crowd was live with every blow or punch. It was obvious that Malignaggi will disturb Khan by punching him low in the belt area or in the ribs and the big man will face problem in holding him back.
In all the three rounds no hard punches were seen and both the fighters made their mark and punches from a distance. The action soon picked up as both the fighters landed heavy blows and punches on their opponent. In the mid of the fourth round Khan landed a right left combination which exasperated Malignaggi but still the signs showed that the fight will continue.
Thirty seconds later Malignaggi was again pounce by Amir Khan this time with a hard uppercut snapping the head back. This brought the crowd live once again and they went on their feet.
The punch by Khan brought a bruise over Malignaggi’s left eye which eventually was turning into a bad cut and was visible. Early into the fifth round Malignaggi was again hammered by Khan. Malignaggi kept on blocking Khan’s massive blows and tried to stay in the game. In the sixth both boxers showed hand speed, Khan was maintaining control of the game by following jabs with his right hand.
Entering the seventh round, it became clear that Khan would likely beat his opponent as he had power advantage against Malignaggi throughout the fight. Two minutes in the eighth round Khan went for Malignaggi with some jabs and snapped Malignaggi’s head with them. He again landed a right left combo and left Malignaggi up against the ropes.
In early ninth round Malignaggi tried to take control of the match by landing some jabs on Khan, but a right hand punch knocked Malignaggi into the ropes. Most of the experts were of the opinion that the fight will continue as Malignaggi was not a person to submit and besides it was a Championship round and both the fighters were trying their best to win the title.
As the cut over the left eye grew to a dangerous level some extra time was called by the physician to examine the cut and was not happy with its condition. Khan saw this and took control of the opportunity. At last the respected referee, Steve Smoger jumped into the ring and stopped the action and in the eleventh round Amir Khan was awarded a TKO victory.
