Amir Khan believes bout against Victor Ortiz at 147-pound division is perfect – Boxing news
Amir Khan, former WBA and IBF junior welterweight champion, believes Victor Ortiz will be the best option to go for at 147 pounds division.
Khan is counting on Lamont Peterson to give the green signal for their rematch against the controversial fight on December 10. Reportedly, Khan’s camp has given Peterson 3 to 4 days to answer.
Peterson, the current WBA and IBF junior welterweight champion, has been offered $1.5 million by Khan’s camp in addition to the 50/50 revenue split. According to Khan, this is the best offer for a fighter like Peterson and he should not reject it.
However, the recent updates from Peterson’s camp suggest otherwise. It is to be believed that Peterson is looking forward to defend his titles against Marquez and not a rematch with Khan. Similarly, even Amir Khan is thinking about a step up in weight to
challenge Victor Ortiz, the former welterweight champion.
If sources are to be believed then Khan is no longer interested in the rematch and nor is Peterson. Both fighters are looking forward to forget what happened last year and move on with their careers. With Ortiz, Khan shares a deep history. In his words,
“I fought him as an amateur, 16 or 17 [years-old] I was. We were young then. He was the champion of America and going to the qualifications for the Olympics. I fought him just before that and I stopped him in the second round. The score was like 22-2, [they
stopped it on] the twenty point rule. As a pro he developed so much power, speed and he's come on a lot. It would be a fight that I would take. I wouldn't say no to it. When we were at 140, we were looking at fighting each other then.”
He further added that after seeing Ortiz’s fighting style, he believes that Ortiz is the ideal fighter to face at 147. Ortiz, who was scheduled for a February 11 fight against Berto that never materialised due to the latter’s arm injury, is looking forward
to a match with Khan as well. However, nothing can be said for sure as yet if the match will happen or not.
