Amir Khan believes he can do the impossible
WBA junior welterweight champ Amir Khan believes he can do the seemingly impossible by beating beat Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Khan has been in the Philippines for the last few weeks preparing for his December 11 bout with Marcos Maidana and aiding superstar Manny Pacquiao in his bid for the WBC junior middleweight title on November 13 against Antonio Margarito.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, who promotes Khan, has been pre-emptively hyping a match up with his fighter and Mayweather for the end of 2011. Khan said he would like to have the fight at Wembley Stadium in England, but if the fight were to happen, it’s
unlikely he’d have the final say.
That privilege would go to Mr. Mayweather, who is the highest grossing fighter in the world.
Nevertheless Khan stuck to his guns in a recent interview, saying, "I always said I wanted a big fight in England. I want to bring the big fights back to this country. The Floyd Mayweather fight would be one of those. I wanted to fight Maidana in the UK,
but he wanted to fight in America. It wasn’t my decision, but I know my true fans are over here and I will come back after this one. The Mayweather fight could definitely happen in England."
Khan emphasized his abilities in a prospective Mayweather bout, saying that "styles make fights" and that he doesn’t believe Mayweather would topple him, because he hasn’t faced anyone with his own speed.
"I don’t think Mayweather has ever fought anyone as fast as me. And with Freddie Roach in my corner, I would be confident fighting him. People have seen how I’ve improved with my performances. For them to be talking about me and saying I should fight Mayweather,
it shows how far I’ve come."
