Amir Khan considers a prospective fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Amir Khan has responded to fans’ excitement and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer’s recent comments about perhaps fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the near future.
At a press conference in L.A. for his upcoming December 11 title bout with Marcos Maidana, the WBA junior welterweight titlist took some time to assess the prospect, wisely weighing that it would be better considered after his upcoming fight.
“You know, that’s a fight to look at in the future,” Khan said.  “I’ve got Maidana to look at first, and I think I’m looking too way ahead if I’m going to start talking about Floyd Mayweather.”
Nevertheless Khan continued: “You know, Floyd’s a great fighter, as everyone knows, he’s pound for pound one of the best fighters alongside Manny Pacquiao.  But you know as a fighter you need to have these ambitions.  I wake up in the morning, my ambition
is to fight the best in the world.  That’s what drives me [...] If I couldn’t beat him, I wouldn’t want to fight him.”
A bout between Maidana and Khan is widely suspected to be one of two of the best prospective bouts of the junior welterweight division, the other being a title match between Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley.
At the presser Maidana appeared in good spirits, after being reminded he had sought Khan since becoming the interim WBA champion over a year ago.  He implied he was happy to compete now that the fight was finally made.  He also said he felt the fight, on
a larger scale, was “England versus Argentina.”
Originally Khan had wanted the fight in his native England, but the idea was dropped after Schaefer secured a deal with HBO for Las Vegas.  It is unknown what kinds of terms HBO is offering at this point or how much they are offering in license fees for
the bout.
