Amir Khan denies reports of fighting Joan Guzman – Boxing News
Former WBA and IBF unified light welterweight titlist Amir Khan has turned down rumours of a fight against Joan Guzman. However, the Briton did acknowledge the fact that he is looking forward to make his ring return on December 15.
Khan, who recently lost his WBA title to American unbeaten fighter Danny Garcia, believes he needs a more credible opponent than Joan Guzman.
“I want someone who is a bit more credible than him. I've come from world title fights and he [Guzman] might be a little below that,” said Khan in an interview to the Manchester Evening News.
“We're just getting the dates right. It will either be in England or America, December 15 is the date,” added the British-Pakistani fighter.
Moreover, Khan even spoke of replacing coach Freddie Roach, following his knockout loss to Garcia.
“I'll be going to New York to speak to a few coaches and maybe bring in a mentor who can help me in defence. I'm mainly looking at ex-fighters, Bernard Hopkins, Oscar [De La Hoya] and maybe Shane Mosley, they all want to help out and show their support,”
he added.
Khan lost to Garcia on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Khan was dominating the fight until the third round, when he received a huge left hook from Garcia. Although Khan was back on his feet in no time, he could not get hold of his game. The
Brit staggered in the ring while Garcia took advantage of him, beating him brutally.
The fight was stopped in the fourth round after the referee thought Khan was no longer in shape to take any more. The loss was devastating to Khan’s career, as it was his career’s second knockout loss and third loss in general.
As of now, Khan is looking forward to either add a defence trainer to his arsenal or completely replace his current trainer Freddie Roach. Khan has asserted earlier that he wants a trainer who can focus only on him, unlike Roach. For Roach, Filipino fight
king Manny Pacquiao is the top priority and Khan is number two, which the Briton hates.
