Amir Khan is eyeing up a showdown clash against pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather in the near future.
Next up for Khan is Danny Garcia on the 14th of July (for you chance to win tickets to this fight go to http://www.wishfree.com/), but he is already planning his next move after that fight and believes it could be a big clash against Mayweather.
Khan lost his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles to Lamont Peterson last December in controversial circumstances and was unable to win them back as “Havoc” tested positive for synthetic testosterone and so a rematch was called off. If he were to beat Garcia he will take the WBC title and effectively would have cleaned up the 140lbs division as there will not be that much left for him.
“This will be the last fight at 140lbs, then we will move on to bigger and better things,” Khan told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
“In the world of boxing there are very few names that can sell tickets and can get big TV viewing figures now, and I'm sure Mayweather is already talking about fighting me.”
At the moment, Mayweather is serving a prison sentence and so will be unavailable to fight for a while. In his last outing against Miguel Cotto he was starting show signs of aging with his performance perhaps not as composed and impenetrable as it has been in the past.
Khan believes he has spotted the chinks in “Moneys” armour and plans to expose them after he has dealt with Garcia.
“It's about timing in this game and Mayweather has shown in his last fight that he's getting caught more,” added Khan.
“His feet have slowed down a lot, his defence is not like it used to be, and his upper body and lateral movement is not the same, but you can't take anything away from his because he's a great fighter.”
“Miguel Cotto was maybe on his A game for that fight, he boxed really well so you can't say that Mayweather did not box well. Cotto boxing amazingly that's why he caught he caught Mayweather with some great shots.”
Realistically, Mayweather is number one on a lot of fighters hit-list, Manny Pacquiao, Saul Alvarez, Timothy Bradley Junior just to name a few of the big names chasing him, however, Khan believes he will get there and it remains his top priority.
“I would love to take that fight against Mayweather one day, it’s an ambition of mine to fight the best out there,” said Khan.
“Just like every fighter's ambition to fight the best, my ambition is to fight Mayweather.”
