Amir Khan eyes Lamont Peterson as his last opponent before he moves up in the division – Boxing news
The current International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Association’s World Light Welterweight Champion, Amir Khan, has revealed he is aiming Lamont ‘Havoc’ Peterson for his last fight before he moves up to the 147lbs division.
Khan’s promoter Richard Schaefer, who is the chief of Golden Boy Promotions, told ESPN.com that they are having discussions with Peterson’s manager and trainer, Barry Hunter.
“That's the fight we are pursuing,” Schaefer said.
The 24-year-old Bolton’s finest pugilist, Khan, who has won 26 of his 27 professional fights, with 18 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, also commented on his upcoming fight.
Khan, who is widely known as King Khan, was refused by Erik Morales and Timothy Bradley. Therefore, Khan admitted it is difficult for him to fight an opponent at 140 lbs. However, Khan was happy as Peterson, who is a mandatory challenger for him, has not
turned down his offer.
Moreover Khan reckons it would be an explosive fight as the Brit knows the Columbian warrior, Peterson, is a skilled fighter who holds a record of winning 29 of his 31 professional fights (1 Draw), with 15 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout.
“Opponents are quite hard to get,” Khan said. “Lamont is a credible opponent. He got a draw with (Victor) Ortiz, who is now fighting (Floyd) Mayweather,” Khan said. “Now he's my mandatory (challenger) and it would be a good fight. He wants to fight and I
am willing to fight him.”
He added, “I know I will give him a tougher fight than Victor Ortiz will. He's never faced anyone as slick as me.”
Many people want to see Amir Khan taking on the Fighting Pride of Philippines, Manny Pacquiao, who is an eight-division world champion and the current WBO Welterweight World Champion (Super Champion), but Khan has been adamant he will never set up a clash
with Pacquiao.
