Amir Khan finally gets his rematch against Lamont Peterson – Boxing news
Amir Khan finally gets his rematch against Lamont Peterson for May 19 in Las Vegas.
The news came in through Amir Khan’s recent tweet. The match will be for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and the World Boxing Association (WBA) light-welterweight titles.
Lamont Peterson, currently holder of both the titles, won them by defeating Amir Khan on December 10 through a controversial decision that took Amir Khan and his camp through storm. The irked former champion had appealed in the IBF to either reverse the
decision or get him an immediate rematch.
According to Khan, the point deductions were unjustified and the appearance of a mystery man in hat talking to the judges before the decision made the judgement doubtful.
However, the appeal was later withdrawn by Amir’s camp saying that they will deal with out of court by offering Lamont Peterson a rematch.
Until today, the rematch was thought to be in jeopardy but now Amir has confirmed that the match will take place at Mandalay Bay Hotel.
Chief Executive of Golden boy, who has been a part of the negotiations, said, “We have a deal, we are all set. This is going to be a big, and I mean a very big fight. The first fight was a terrific fight, an all-action fight, a lot of controversy, a lot
of questions surrounding it so this one here is hopefully going to clear up all these question marks.”
It should be noted here that Lamont Peterson was given 180 days to decide if he wants to go for the rematch or not by the WBA. According to WBA, after thorough investigation many irregularities were found in the match and so a rematch is compulsory.
Khan’s defeat had not only annoyed him but his fans all around the world too. Lamont Peterson was considered the underdog for the match but he won surprising many analysts and former players who had given Khan all their trust.
However, now it seems like Khan has another chance to prove his skills. If Khan is unable to win this match then all his cries for the last two months will go to waste.
