Amir Khan hypes a Floyd Mayweather fight next year
Amir Khan’s talk is starting to seriously outpace his performance in the ring.
In a latest offering for the tabloids, Khan has suggested he will be ready to fight undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year.
After reportedly receiving the blessing of sparring partner Manny Pacquiao, the WBA junior welterweight champ felt confident enough to disclose the possibility of a bout in 2011.
"Manny thinks it will be a good fight because he's trained with me, sparred with me, [and] he really thinks I'm good enough to fight Mayweather now," Khan said like a teenager trying
to convince his parents of something he doesn’t believe himself.
The WBA junior welterweight champion just returned from a two-week sparring stint with superstar Manny Pacquiao, ahead of Pacquiao's upcoming 13 November clash with Antonio Margarito.
As Khan and Pacquiao are trained by the legendary Freddie Roach, it only made sense they would lace em’ up for Pacquiao’s forthcoming bout.
"I think in the next 12 months, when I get even better and with more experience, I think I'll be in better condition to fight him then,” Khan said of Mayweather.  “This is a timing game and I want to fight
him when I think I'm ready, not when he's ready and I'm not.  I want to fight him when we're both ready and when I've hit my peak.”
Before that, Khan will have to make short work of knockout artist Marcos Maidana, who he’s set to fight on 11 December in Las Vegas.
As betting odds go for that fight, it's really a rogue card.  Khan has a formidable record and is arguably one of the most talented fighters in the ring today, but he’s shown he has something of a glass
chin, which could be devastating against Maidana.
The reality is, some guys just aren’t psychologically cut out for big-time success in the ring, and Khan has yet to prove he can handle that kind of pressure and perform.  The fight will be his opportunity,
however, and will determine how he is perceived in the distant future.
